rules for photographing a scoliotic patient

Artbook

A collaboration with artist Woong Soak Teng on her book about scoliosis, as part of the project A Different Reading, organised by THEBOOKSHOW

The publication comes encased within a stark-white sleeve, bound tightly by velcro straps. The book’s spine is exposed, revealing the raw binding reminiscent of some of the scars left by surgical procedures.

︎︎︎ Contained within are 2 books:

The first book (128pp) consists of a collage of photographs taken by the artist, juxtaposed against extracted archival text and image.

The second book (32pp) consists of a collection of interview transcripts; conversations made between the artist and the individuals depicted in the first book.

︎︎︎ Artist Statement

Developing out of personal experience with scoliosis and a chance encounter with medical archives at the Wellcome Collection, 'rules for photographing a scoliotic patient' finds its way through found images, text, materials and objects related to the abnormal curvature of the spine.

Through arrangement of visual and tactile materials and collaboration with other scoliotic individuals, this ongoing exercise attempts to make sense of various inventions of spinal interventions, the role of image-making in the medical field, the male gaze towards the female body and human experiences of living with spinal deformity.

Yolk

Lantern

Yolk is a lantern inspired by an egg yolk suspended in its albumen.

It consists of 2 wet sanded vacuum-formed plastic shells that are weaved together, encasing a suspended light within. The glowing ‘yolk’ inside is actually just an orange water balloon with an LED shining into it. Hung in a mesh sack like a pendulum, the ‘yolk’ oscillates within the ‘membrane’, phasing in brightness and fuzziness as the holder walks around.

I discovered that when you shine light into a filled water balloon, it makes the entire balloon glow in the most pleasant way. Combined with the frosty diffusion provided by the sanded plastic, a warm and comforting orange glow is created, suspended playfully in an aesthetically blobular membrane.

Metal Holder

Object

A small yet heavy metal holder. Bent thin sheets of polished aluminium rest softly on an frame constructed from bent thick rods of blackened steel welded together.

The object is a study into contrast and the relationship between curves, lines, and the materiality of metal. Fluidity vs Rigidity. Softness vs Hardness. Polish vs Rough.
